Hatid Eskwela 2011

"HUNDREDS OF BAGS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES WERE DONATED TO STUDENTS OF BRGY. LUCANIN"

Some 170 schoolchildren in the province of Bataan were the recent beneficiaries of the “Hatid Eskwela 2010”program of the Unioil Foundation Incorporated (UFI), an annual undertaking designed to help poor parents send their children to school.

Now on its sixth year, this year’s project benefited school children in Barangay Lucanin in the municipality of Mariveles, Bataan enabling them to attend schools without their parents having to worry about their school bags and complete set of school supplies.

“We gave school bags and school supplies such as notebooks, pencils, ballpens, crayons and coloring materials to the school children in time for the school opening this year,” UFI President Paul Co said.

“This is part of our effort to enable children, especially those coming from poor families to attend school. Project such as this also embodies the dedication of the Foundation in uplifting the lives of poor Filipinos,” he added.

Aside from the school supplies, kids were also treated to a free meal courtesy of the Foundation.

Leah Flor, UFI Executive Director who led the activity said the sight of the children with their parents beaming with excitement as they received the school bags and school supplies more than made up for the nearly 4-hour ride from Manila.

“The Foundation is very honored to be of help to our less fortunate brothers and sisters in meeting the educational needs of their children,” Flor said.

Co said the need for the provision of school supplies to the children were brought to the attention of the Foundation last month by Lucanin’s Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC) which sought the UFI’s assistance before the opening of classes.

Oilink International Corporation which maintained an oil terminal in the area also came forward when they heard the predicament of many parents who complained of the high prices of school supplies making them unable to buy one for their children.

With the success of this year’s activity, Co said UFI will endeavour to include more beneficiaries in next school year.

“We are already working with our partners to ensure that we will be able to have more beneficiaries next year,” he said.

According to Co, UFI is also set to announce the list of its scholars for this semester.

The scholars are currently enrolled in the elementary, secondary and tertiary education in various schools in the country.

The foundation is the corporate social arm of the Unioil Petroleum Philippines Incorporated (UPPI), one of the country’s leading independent oil player.-30-
